Animals That Benefit Your Garden

You might worry so much about your landscaping that any sign of animal life concerns you. The truth is that not all animals are bad for your landscaping. Some of them are actually beneficial.

Before you remove a critter next time, consider these facts:

  • Some animals help your plants by aiding in pollination.
  • There are animals that actually stop pests from calling your landscape home.
  • Many animals fertilize the soil and improve its health.
  • Some animals are needed for the balance of the ecosystem.

Interested in finding out which animals are helpful to your landscaping? Your landscaper can give you a pretty good idea. But for now, here is a short list of some of them.

Bees

Bees perform an important role in the process of pollination. They like fruit trees, vegetables and flowering plants, especially the colorful ones. Need help making your garden bloom? Plant what bees love and watch them work their magic.

Garter Snakes

This might be a surprising piece of advice for many people, but garter snakes are great for gardens. They’re harmless, but they provide natural pest control by feeding on leeches, insects, slugs and small rodents. You can attract garter snakes by giving them hiding places like woodpiles, stones and mulch.

Birds and Bats

If you want to get rid of mosquitoes and other harmful insects, bats and birds are your best friend. Some birds even eat harmful beetles. You can attract birds by building a bird bath and feeder or nesting shelves. Bats will appreciate a bat house.

Earthworms

Earthworms make the soil rich with water and oxygen, thanks to their burrowing. You can construct a worm bin to make these little critters thrive in your garden. You can also benefit from the presence of centipedes, as they naturally make other insects scamper away.

Not every creature that moves in your garden is harmful. Learn more about beneficial animals so you can let them thrive in your landscaping, and in turn they will make your soil and plants healthier.
