Why Build a Pond in the Fall

Most homeowners prioritize their landscaping. Beautiful landscaping makes a property pop. It adds curb appeal in a way no other home feature can.

One of the best features you can add to your landscaping to make it even more appealing is a pond. So when should you schedule a pond addition? The best time to build your pond is in the fall. Here’s why:

  • Spring showers can delay the work of your landscaper. Sometimes, rainy weather lasts for weeks, so it’s better to build your pond in the fall.
  • Summer can be too hot. Not only is it harsh for the plants, but it’s also more challenging for workers to do an outdoor job.
  • Fall is a time for plants to grow roots, so if you plant your water-based bog plants during this season, they’d have stored plenty of energy for healthy growth come spring.
  • Starting the pond in the fall will give you a mature and healthy pond in the spring.

Now that you know why fall is the best time to build your pond, it’s time to consider a few more reminders before you start your project.

  • Every pond is different, so think about the elements you want in yours. For example, you can ask your landscaping company about the types of rocks that you can use.
  • The size of the pond plus its positioning in your backyard have an effect on how well your plants bloom. At least ? of your pond should get six hours of sunlight or more every day.
  • Your plants and fish have water depth preferences. For example, it’s okay for goldfish to swim in any depth, but if you want some koi, the water should be at least three feet deep.
  • Discuss the components with your contractor. These may include the type of plants, the type of fish, and other features, such as a waterfall and outdoor lighting.
