Swales
These are depressions that follow the contour around the base of a natural or man-made slope, allowing stormwater to be channeled to another location away from your home. The gently-sloped banks of swales can feature plants that take up as much as rainwater as possible. Here, the soil used must be able to drain water fast. Heavy water flow can be managed with the addition of perforated pipes laid in gravel, also known as French drains.
Permeable Paving
A landscaper can incorporate paving materials with small gaps in the planned landscaping. These allow water to seep through into the layer of quick-draining gravel and into the soil underneath. The top surface of the pavement remains dry, minimizing instances of run-offs during a heavy downpour. Permeable paving comes in various types, including concrete pavers with voids in between, porous concrete or asphalt, and plastic grids.
Rain Garden
This patch of soil in your yard is essentially a shallow catch basin filled with a bed of flowers. It is commonly the endpoint of swales within the landscaping, and it is where water gets absorbed into the soil and promote plant growth. A rain garden should be situated in an area that dries out quickly. It should be at least 10 feet from your home and at least four-times as far from a steep slope.
