Soft Illumination: The Different Types of Outdoor Lighting

The aesthetic appeal of your home’s landscaping is on full display during the day. However, just because the sun is setting doesn’t mean that aesthetic appeal has to fade away as well. By adding some outdoor lighting, you can emphasize landscaping features that normally wouldn’t get too much attention during the day.

Sherwood Gardens Landscape Design & Development, a top landscaper in the state, lists the different types of outdoor lighting and elaborates on what they can add to your landscaping.

Garden Lights

Before you add lighting to trees and plant beds, make sure the paved pathways are well-lit. In addition to being used to light plant beds, garden lights can also serve as pathway markers that can make a night stroll across the front lawn safer.

Unlike other types of lighting that usually blend into the background, the design of garden lights is often integrated into the landscaping.

Well Lights

If, however, you prefer that all of the attention is focused on the ornamental shrubs, fixture lights would be a good choice. Fixture light bulbs are hidden inside underground waterproof housing, allowing them to light the underside of foliage without drawing attention to themselves.

Downlight Fixtures

Subtlety is arguably the most important aspect of outdoor lighting at nighttime. A soft glow is preferable to bright lights, as it mimics natural moonbeams. For those who want to replicate that moonlit effect, they can install downlight fixtures on trunks and branches and point them toward lawns and pathways.

Flood Lights

Soft lights are best suited for highlighting landscaping features such as foliage and pathways. When it comes to highlighting house facades, however, you can turn the brightness up a notch. In such cases, it’d be best to use flood lights, which can cast a wide, bright beam over the facade. They can also be used to illuminate tall trees.

When in doubt, it’s always best to consult an experienced landscaper. Each house has its own strengths, and a landscaper will know how to build on them.
