The First-Time Landscaper’s Guide to Planning a Project

Landscaping can improve your home’s curb appeal significantly. However, it can get overwhelming if you don’t know where to start. Read on as the landscaping experts at Sherwood Gardens give you a step-by-step overview of the landscaping process below.

List Your Needs and Wants

Like with any home improvement project, figure out why you’re doing the project in the first place. Do you want to enhance your home’s curb appeal? Or does your family need more leisure space?

Find the Ideal Location to Landscape

A common mistake first-time landscapers make is forgetting to factor in the weather at their ideal spot. For example, if you’re planning to add a patio on the west side of your house, you won’t be able to hold dinner there. That’s because that side receives a lot of sunlight in the afternoon.

Spend Time at Your Chosen Spot

Doing your research on weather patterns can help you avoid this pitfall, but it can only do so much. To find out if it really is the perfect spot, you’ll need to spend some time in it. Are you satisfied with the view it provides? At what time of the day does it get too hot or too cold? Remember, landscaping isn’t something you can rush.

Find the Visual Focal Point

This is something you should always remember if you want to enhance your curb appeal. Suppose you’re landscaping your garden, you’ll need to find a sculpture or a plant that you’d want people to notice immediately. Keep in mind that a garden can have several focal points.

Strike a Balance Between Scale and Pacing

This is the trickiest part—you need to find the right balance between the repetition and design of elements. For example, if you’re landscaping your garden, there needs to be a variety of plants. But at the same time, they all need to be in complementary colors and heights. Otherwise, your garden will look like an overgrown patch of wildflowers and weeds. This is the reason why it’d be better to leave this kind of work to an experienced landscaper
